These songs are the result of a live radio show about songwriting. Rise and Shine, in which songs are written each morning based on, indeed inspired by the daily news. Audience participation from start to finish, it was seat-of-your-pants, never fail, low budget genius.
The pilot show ran Feb – March 2008 and Dec 19th – 24th 2008. All proceeds went to Busk Aid, sadly no more, but once a really good south African charity which provided extremely poor children living in deprived townships with musical instruments and a music education. It really was a feel good breakfast show, with lots of wit and expression, some fabulous guests, and generous contributions from our talented and engaged audience.
Presented by Dean Whitbread, with fellow house writer Dan Brittain, guest composers Mike Turtle, Ben Walker, Louise Whitham, and keyboards, guitars, piano, poetry, sound effects and lyrics contributed by the audience, the unpredictable process of completing a songfrom scratch in three hours proved addictive.
The results were consistent and varied, and the results are a spread of story-telling topical songs, with some great tunes. We still donate from this income stream to charities which foster access to music making for children in poverty. So buy!
